Playbook 1: The Year You'll Never Get Back
August 3, 2026 · 8 min read
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12
Welcome
Dear Senior Mom,
If you're reading this, chances are you're standing on the edge of a year you've been anticipating for nearly two decades.
Maybe you've spent the summer buying school supplies, ordering senior portraits, or wondering how it's possible that the little hand you once held now reaches for a set of car keys.
Maybe you're excited. Maybe you're overwhelmed. Maybe you're trying to soak in every moment while quietly wondering where the time went.
The truth is, senior year is unlike any other year of parenting. It's filled with celebrations, decisions, milestones, laughter, and yes… probably a few tears.
People will tell you how to prepare for college applications, financial aid, scholarships, and graduation. We'll absolutely cover all of that.
But this journey is about something even more important. It's about being present.
It's about recognizing that this isn't just your child's final year of high school—it's the final chapter of a season that has shaped your family.
There will be plenty of “lasts.” The last first day. The last football game. The last school dance. The last report card. The last time they call your house “home” every single day.
Those moments can feel bittersweet. But they can also become some of the most beautiful memories you'll ever make.
My hope is that this playbook helps you prepare for every deadline while also reminding you to pause long enough to enjoy the moments in between.
So take more pictures. Laugh a little longer. Ask one more question. Say “yes” to one more family dinner.
And remember… the little things you do this year will become the stories you tell for the rest of your life.
Welcome to the journey. I'm so glad you're here.
This Week's Mission
This week isn't about applications or deadlines. It's about setting your family's intention for senior year.
Instead of asking, “What college are you going to?” ask, “How do we want to remember this year?”
Those are two very different questions. One focuses on the destination. The other focuses on the journey. Choose the journey.
Prepare
Create your Senior Year Binder (or digital folder). Start one place where everything lives. Include sections for:
- ☐School Calendar
- ☐College Applications
- ☐Scholarships
- ☐FAFSA
- ☐Test Scores
- ☐Recommendation Letters
- ☐Housing
- ☐Financial Aid
- ☐Graduation
- ☐Keepsakes
- ☐Medical Records
- ☐Important Passwords
- ☐Senior Photos
Celebrate
Start one new family tradition. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Choose one tradition you'll continue throughout senior year.
- Sunday night ice cream
- Monthly breakfast date
- One selfie every month
- Friday football dinner
- Coffee before big milestones
- Family game night
- Birthday interview
- Prayer before every college visit
Traditions become anchors. Years from now, you'll remember how they made everyone feel.
Capture
Your “before” photos. Don't wait for senior portraits. This week, take photos of your senior:
- In their bedroom
- Pulling out of the driveway
- At their favorite coffee shop
- Hanging out with siblings
- With the family dog
- Doing homework
- Playing video games
- Laughing with friends
One day, you'll treasure these ordinary moments just as much as the big milestones.
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing our family to this milestone. Help us not rush through this season. Give us eyes to see the beauty in ordinary days and hearts that choose gratitude over worry. Guide our child's decisions, strengthen our family, and remind us that You have already gone before us. May this year be filled with joy, wisdom, growth, and memories that point us back to Your goodness. Amen.
Conversation Starter
Instead of asking, “Are you excited for senior year?” try asking:
“When you look back on this year ten years from now, what do you hope you'll remember most?”
Then just listen. You might be surprised by the answer.
Senior Snapshot
Write it down before you forget. This week:
Current Favorite Song
Favorite Restaurant
Dream College/Career
Best Friend(s)
Current Hobby
Something That Made Them Laugh This Week
One Thing They're Looking Forward To
Memory Box Challenge
Find a box you'll use all year long. Every week, add one small item.
- A football ticket
- A note from a teacher
- A graduation announcement
- A coffee sleeve from your campus visit
- A pressed flower from prom
- A handwritten note
- A wristband from Senior Night
By graduation, you'll have a time capsule of the year.
Looking Ahead
Playbook 2 – Start with the End in Mind. We'll begin dreaming about life after high school, explore different paths, and have meaningful conversations that focus less on pressure and more on purpose.
When I started this journey with my own senior, I thought the biggest challenge would be keeping up with applications and deadlines. Instead, I discovered the greatest challenge was remembering to slow down. Senior year has a way of moving at lightning speed. My hope is that these playbooks help you stay organized—but more importantly, help you notice the little moments that often become the biggest memories.
The checklist will help you prepare for the future. The moments you choose to celebrate will become the memories you carry forever.
