Playbook 3: Build the Calendar. Protect the Moments.

August 17, 2026 · 8 min read

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.

Proverbs 16:3

A Letter to You

Welcome

Dear Senior Mom,

If you've opened your calendar lately, you've probably noticed something…

Senior year fills up fast.

There are college application deadlines, football games, senior portraits, ACT and SAT dates, homecoming, FAFSA, scholarships, dances, family vacations, awards ceremonies, graduation meetings, and somewhere in between… life.

It's easy to feel like this year is becoming one giant to-do list.

But here's something I've learned:

The busiest families aren't always the happiest families. The families who protect what matters most usually are.

This playbook isn't about color-coded calendars or perfectly organized planners.

It's about making sure the important moments don't get squeezed out by the urgent ones.

Because while deadlines matter…

So do Tuesday night dinners.

So does watching one more basketball game.

So does saying yes to ice cream after practice.

Senior year isn't meant to be survived.

It's meant to be experienced.

This week, we're going to organize your calendar so you have more freedom to enjoy the year.

Schedule Memories

This Week's Mission

Don't just schedule appointments.

Schedule memories.

If it's important enough to remember…

It's important enough to put on the calendar.

Build Your Senior Year Master Calendar

Prepare

Choose one calendar your entire family can access.

Whether it's:

  • Google Calendar
  • Apple Calendar
  • A paper planner
  • A family command center
  • A wall calendar in the kitchen

The key is having one place where everything lives.

Add these dates first:

  • First Day of School
  • School Holidays
  • Homecoming
  • Prom
  • Senior Portrait Deadline
  • Yearbook Deadline
  • College Application Deadlines
  • FAFSA Opening Date
  • Scholarship Deadlines
  • ACT/SAT Test Dates
  • College Visits
  • Athletic Seasons
  • Senior Night(s)
  • Graduation Rehearsal
  • Graduation
  • College Orientation
  • Move-In Day

Then…

Add birthdays.

Family vacations.

Date nights.

Church events.

Sunday dinners.

Those matter just as much.

Choose Your Family Traditions

Celebrate

Sit down together and decide:

What traditions do we refuse to miss this year?

Ideas include:

  • Pancake breakfast on the first day of school
  • Monthly family dinner at your favorite restaurant
  • Friday night football tailgate
  • Birthday breakfast
  • Christmas ornament for senior year
  • Monthly coffee date with Mom
  • One family adventure every month
  • Sunday evening walks
  • Prayer before every big milestone

Write them on your calendar today.

Protect them like appointments.

Create Your "One Second Every Day" Video

Capture

This may become your favorite keepsake.

Choose one app (or simply save short clips in a folder).

Every day…

Capture one or two seconds.

Nothing fancy.

Just life.

Examples:

  • Morning coffee
  • Walking into school
  • Practice
  • Friends laughing
  • Family dinner
  • Homework
  • The dog greeting them
  • Driving lessons
  • Game nights
  • Sunset after practice

By graduation…

You'll have an entire year captured in just a few minutes.

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for every opportunity this year will bring. Help us manage our time with wisdom and protect what matters most. When our calendar feels full, remind us that people are always more important than plans. Teach us to slow down, notice Your blessings, and choose presence over perfection. May our home be filled with laughter, gratitude, and peace throughout this special year. Amen.

Then Just Listen

Conversation Starter

Ask your senior:

"If we could only choose three family traditions to protect this year, which ones would you never want to miss?"

Their answer may surprise you.

Looking Ahead

Playbook 4 – Building the College List. We'll talk about finding the right fit, visiting campuses, asking the right questions, and remembering that the best college isn't always the most famous one—it's the place where your child can thrive.

A Note from Sarah

As moms, we often spend so much time managing everyone's schedules that we forget to protect our own memories. This week reminded me that every date on the calendar represents more than an event—it represents time we'll never get back. My hope is that when you look at your calendar this year, you don't just see deadlines. I hope you see dinners around the table, hugs after games, spontaneous ice cream stops, and ordinary evenings that one day will become the stories your family tells.

Remember This Week

The calendar isn't there to fill every hour. It's there to make sure the moments that matter most have a place.
