Playbook 6: Build the Senior Bucket List
September 7, 2026 · 8 min read
Welcome to Week 6
When we think about senior year, we usually think about the milestones.
The first football game.
Homecoming.
Senior night.
Prom.
Graduation.
But years from now?
Those probably won't be the moments your family talks about the most.
You'll remember the random Tuesday night ice cream run.
The drive with the windows down after practice.
The last family vacation before college.
The late-night conversations in the kitchen.
The laughter.
The traditions.
The ordinary moments that quietly become extraordinary simply because they're the last.
One thing I've learned is this: The best memories rarely happen by accident. Sometimes we have to make room for them.
So this week, sit down with your senior and create a Senior Year Bucket List.
Not because everything has to be checked off.
But because writing it down reminds you to actually live this year instead of just surviving it.
Family Moments
- Watch the sunrise together.
- Have one "yes day" where your senior picks everything.
- Recreate an old childhood photo.
- Cook their favorite meal together.
- Visit the place where they learned to ride a bike.
- Plan one weekend road trip.
- Watch old home videos.
- Write letters to each other to open after graduation.
School Traditions
- Go to every football game possible.
- Attend Homecoming.
- Dress up for Spirit Week.
- Take a picture on the first day and the last day.
- Attend the school play or concert.
- Take a photo with favorite teachers.
- Eat lunch together one day if your school allows.
- Buy the yearbook.
Friend Memories
- Beach day.
- Movie marathon.
- Bonfire.
- Breakfast before school.
- One last sleepover.
- Senior sunrise or sunset.
- Create a shared playlist.
- Disposable camera challenge.
Capture the Little Things
Their bedroom.
Their backpack.
Their first car.
Their locker.
Their favorite hoodie.
Their sports gear.
Their after-school job.
Their handwriting.
The school parking lot.
Friday night lights.
The driveway before they leave for school.
One day, those little details will mean everything.
Pick ONE thing this week that isn't on anyone's calendar. Not because you have to. Because you'll never get this exact week back. Maybe it's ice cream after dinner. Maybe it's a walk. Maybe it's sitting on the porch talking for an hour. Your senior won't remember every deadline. But they'll remember how you made them feel. And that's the legacy of senior year.
Lord, Help me slow down enough to notice the moments I might otherwise miss. Give me eyes to see the joy in the ordinary and the wisdom to choose presence over perfection. Help our family laugh often, love deeply, and cherish every "last" without fearing what's next. Thank You for every memory we're making, even the ones that don't seem important today. Amen.
