Playbook 8: Celebrate Who They're Becoming
September 21, 2026 · 8 min read
More Than a Résumé
Somewhere during senior year, it can feel like your child becomes a list.
GPA.
Test scores.
College applications.
Scholarships.
Athletic stats.
Volunteer hours.
Awards.
Acceptance letters.
It's easy to get caught up in checking the boxes and forget the incredible person standing in front of us.
But when you think about your child years from now, chances are you won't remember their ACT score or exactly when they submitted an application.
You'll remember the way they laughed until they cried.
The way they looked after a younger sibling.
The kindness they showed when no one was watching.
The determination they found after a setback.
The courage to try something new.
Those are the things that truly matter.
Senior year isn't simply about preparing them for college or the workforce.
It's about recognizing the character that's been growing all along.
Take a moment this week to look beyond the accomplishments and ask yourself:
Who is my child becoming?
Maybe they're becoming resilient.
Compassionate.
Confident.
Faithful.
Responsible.
Courageous.
Those qualities will carry them much farther than any line on a college application.
This Week's Challenge
Write down ten things you admire about your senior that have nothing to do with grades, athletics, or achievements.
Think about their character.
Their heart.
Their sense of humor.
Their work ethic.
Their compassion.
Then, tell them.
Not all at once.
Leave a note in their lunch.
Send a text.
Say it during a car ride.
Slip a handwritten letter onto their pillow.
Your words have the power to become part of the story they tell themselves for years to come.
The world will spend plenty of time measuring what your senior does. Make sure home is the place where they know they are loved simply because of who they are.
Lord, Thank You for the unique person You created my child to be. Help me see beyond accomplishments and celebrate the character You are forming within them. Give me words that build confidence, speak truth, and remind them that their worth is never found in a score, a scholarship, or an acceptance letter. May our home always be a place where they feel deeply known, deeply loved, and encouraged to become the person You have called them to be. Amen.
